چکیده

Ideally, programming propagators as implementations of constraints should be an entirely declarative specification process for a large class of constraints: a high-level declarative specification is automatically translated into an efficient propagator. This paper introduces the use of existential monadic secondorder logic as declarative specification language for finite set propagators. The approach taken in the paper is to automatically derive projection propagators (involving a single variable only) implementing constraints described by formulas. By this, the paper transfers the ideas of indexicals to finite set constraints while considerably increasing the level of abstraction available with indexicals. The paper proves soundness and completeness of the derived propagators and presents a run-time analysis, including techniques for efficiently executing projectors for n-ary constraints.

Constraint propagation in Mozart

This thesis presents constraint propagation in Mozart which is based on computational agents called propagators. The thesis designs, implements, and evaluates propagator-based propagation engines. A propagation engine is split up in generic propagation services and domain specific domain solvers which are connected by a constraint programming interface. Propagators use filters to perform constr...

Reformulation of Global Constraints in Answer Set Programming

We show that global constraints on finite domains like alldifferent can be reformulated into answer set programs on which we achieve arc, bound or range consistency. These reformulations offer a number of other advantages beyond providing the power of global propagators to answer set programming. For example, they provide other constraints with access to the state of the propagator by sharing v...

Propagation = Lazy Clause Generation

Finite domain propagation solvers effectively represent the possible values of variables by a set of choices which can be naturally modelled as Boolean variables. In this paper we describe how we can mimic a finite domain propagation engine, by mapping propagators into clauses in a SAT solver. This immediately results in strong nogoods for finite domain propagation. But a naive static translati...

Set Domain Propagation Using ROBDDs

Propagation based solvers typically represent variables by a current domain of possible values that may be part of a solution. Finite set variables have been considered impractical to represent as a domain of possible values since, for example, a set variable ranging over subsets of {1, . . . , N} has 2 possible values. Hence finite set variables are presently represented by a lower bound set a...

Propagating Regular Counting Constraints

Constraints over finite sequences of variables are ubiquitous in sequencing and timetabling. This led to general modelling techniques and generic propagators, often based on deterministic finite automata (DFA) and their extensions. We consider counter-DFAs (cDFA), which provide concise models for regular counting constraints, that is constraints over the number of times a regular-language patte...
